Mafia 2 Hands-on Impressions from GDC 2010

In development at 2K Czech, the Xbox 360 versions of Mafia II was playable at GDC 2010. I was shown a brief video presentation introducing me to Vito, the game's main character, and the mission I would be playing.

s Vito, home on leave from World War II after being wounded, meets up with his old friend Joe. But while Vito was off killing Nazis, Joe became involved in organized crime and soon serves as the driving factor behind Vito's descent into the criminal underworld. After a few quick calls, Vito is "provided" with paperwork proving that his injuries are more severe than previously thought. He won't be returning to war.

Blago does Letterman's Top Ten: 'Haven't I been though enough?'

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, continuing to forgo his right to remain silent as he awaits his federal trial, taped an appearance for today's edition of "Late Show with David Letterman," delivering a Top 10 list of questions he asked himself before agreeing to appear as a contestant on NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice."

"Go ahead, take off your hat and make yourself at home," Letterman said, welcoming the disgraced politician with a crack about his much-abused hair.

Blagojevich was out to promote Sunday night's debut of "Celebrity Apprentice," the Donald Trump game show on which he will be a contestant.

Warrant: Woman charged in killing tried to clean up crime scene

A Mokena woman who fatally stabbed her 89-year-old mother in their bathroom allegedly tried to clean up the crime scene before driving to the police station and confessing to a front-desk clerk, according to a search warrant that recently became public.
Prosecutors have said that Gaye Wern, 57, killed her mother, Tresa McCauley, in their three-bedroom condo on Feb. 15 because she believed she couldn't live up to McCauley's "expectations."

Wern, who was providing medical care for her mother, is being held in the Will County jail on $2 million bond.

The new details are included in a Mokena police officer's search warrant affidavit.

After officers entered the home using a garage-door opener Wern provided, McCauley was found in the bathtub. She had been repeatedly stabbed in the left chest area and appeared to have defensive wounds on her wrist, fingers and hands, according to the affidavit.

Wern had a wound on her left wrist. Poli...

Cops: School bus driver drunk while taking kids from school

A Mount Prospect school bus driver was nearly three times over the legal limit for alcohol after she dropped off about 50 children from an elementary school, police say.

Betty Burden, 54, of the 1440 block of Park Drive, was arrested late Tuesday afternoon after police got a call from Vincente Ramirez, the transportation supervisor with Mount Prospect School District 57 around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Another bus driver had smelled alcohol on Burden's breath at 2:30 p.m., before she took off from Lions Elementary School. But school officials said state law prevented either her or Ramirez from confronting Burden.

Instead, Ramirez followed the bus and eventually called police. By the time officers pulled her over around 4 p.m., Burden had dropped off all the children, officials said.

Civilization 5 First Impressions from GDC 2010

The recently announced Civilization V will use hexes in place of square tiles along with some major combat changes. The game was shown off at GDC 2010 and I got a look at the new UI, diplomacy, and combat running beautifully in Windows 7 and DirectX 11.

New Screenshots from GDC 2010

The new UI is streamlined, minimalistic, and functional. While every option isn't presented by default, all of the options are a click-away. Fans worried about a simplification based on Civilization Revolution should not fear. Notifications are also handled by an icon system. You won't have to follow laggy, s...

U of I trustees vote to pay outgoing chancellor $273K

The University of Illinois board of trustees voted today to give Richard Ringeisen, the retiring chancellor of the Springfield campus, a one-year paid administrative leave after he steps down Oct. 31.

The arrangement, in which Ringeisen will be paid $273,500 but not have any job responsibilities, is a change to what was proposed last week.
Under the former deal, Ringeisen would have kept his salary for 14 months while serving as a consultant to the president.

Ringeisen, 65, asked for the change, said spokesman Tom Hardy.

Credited with transforming the Springfield campus into a more traditional university, Ringeisen got a standing ovation at today's meeting in Champaign. During his near decade as chancellor, the number of students and faculty increased and the campus added many buildings. It also has been on the forefront of offering academic programs online.

In its vote on Ringeisen's new employment arrangement, the board decided...
